Optimizing A New Website

by Fleming Slone

5.) Understanding Your Visitors

Many times you will notice that the number of visitors coming to your site may vary by season or other external factors. Being aware of it can help you gain from it. If I notice that visitors are coming to my site in November and December every year looking for the Nikon-X6500 I am trying to sell, I can use this to get some more traffic to my pages. Let's say I take a look at my referring keywords in Analytics and notice that my users are looking for a Christmas present. I could create a page like mysite.com/Nikon-X6500-Best-Christmas-Gift-2011.html and put up some text about how I am selling a great camera that is a perfect gift for aspiring photographers. Adding a date onto the page will show search engines that the content is fresh and relevant for the current year because it is dated as such. Get creative with your file names and experiment with different phrases until you find the winning combinations that will drive visitors to your site. Don't be impatient though, sometimes a search engine will not pick up your page until it gets closer to the particular time of year you are trying to target.
